The Nightmare of Lost Travel Documents

April 30th, 2010

One problem often faced by British holidaymakers is the loss of passport or travel documents. Although those that have so far been affected would assume that they are alone in it, recent statistics have shown there are nearly 2 million of such cases each year.

Of all the problems travellers may face while on holiday, the loss of travel documents is, perhaps, the most daunting. This is because it brings almost everything to a standstill for the unfortunate traveller – from feeling frustrated with the whole holiday or travel to getting stuck in a foreign place even if they choose to head back home etc. It becomes one serious problem around which their whole life revolves and a real pain that they find hard to easily get over.

In the end, said the study by Halifax Travel Insurance, travellers are forced to extend their stay while they sort the problem by at least three days. And this leads to an additional cost of up to

Why Get Travel Insurance?

April 26th, 2010

Today’s traveler can and should get travel insurance. A lot of things can go wrong when traveling today. For example, your trip may be canceled, your baggage could be lost, and you may have a medical emergency. All these expenses can be covered by some of today’s insurance companies. So before you travel, consider insurance. Here are two examples that I have encountered.

Example 1

We had a friend visiting us from England. During her visit we went horse back riding. She fell while riding, right on her back. Seeing she was in pain, we did not want to move her and went and called 911. The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) transported her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a severely bruised back. She spent several days in pain, but fortunately she recovered. The best thing of all this, she had travel insurance and was fully covered.

Example 2

Another friend came and visited us while we lived in Alaska. One day she complained of a swollen spot on her leg. After applying home remedy it only got worse. We took her to the emergency room where she was diagnose with a spider bite. After the proper treatment, she was released and had a full recovery. And of course, the best part of this experience was she had insurance. So she was fully covered.

Travel insurance not only covers you medically, but will pay for lost baggage and trip cancellation. With the large amount of trip disruptions because of weather concerns and tightened security at airports, it may be worthwhile to look into insurance.

Over 65 Travel Insurance – 3 Tips to Get the Best Senior Travel Insurance

April 23rd, 2010

Finding the right insurance to suit your individual needs can be a tricky task. This is especially the case when it comes to over 65 travel insurance.

The fact is that some travel insurance providers are unwilling to insure senior citizens. Their reluctance is based on their assumption that those aged over 65 are more prone to accidents and falling ill whilst on holiday, which is why travellers over 65 can find themselves having to pay as much as three times more than a younger person.

However, don’t despair. There are still plenty of insurers and policies to choose from that can offer you a great deal if you shop around and follow the 3 following tips:

1. Don’t buy insurance from a travel agent. Although your tour operator or travel agent may offer to arrange insurance for you, they themselves are not insurers. Another insurance company will actually provide the policy, which will probably not be the best for your needs, nor particularly competitively priced. A specialized travel insurance provider is better placed to offer you a better deal.

2. Cut out policy options you are unlikely to need. A lot of standard policies will incorporate cover for things you just will not need, so be sure to remove them. For instance, why pay for the privilege of being covered to bungee jump, scuba dive etc, if you have no intention (or stomach!) to do them?

3. Take out a single-trip policy. Unless you are planning to travel abroad a number of times during a year, you will usually find that a single-trip policy is better suited and better value for travelers aged over 65.

The Internet is a great resource for those looking for the best value over 65’s travel insurance. You will find a host of specialist travel insurance providers online that can offer you that piece of mind cover at a very reasonable price. Just take your time, and be sure to get a few quotes to compare.
